Introduction to CILT

The Institute of Transport was founded in London on 3rd November 1919 by a group of senior transport professionals to improve transport efficiency, enable transport integration and encourage talent development in the transport industry as they saw the failures of moving goods and vehicles during the first world war. It was granted the royal charter in 1926 by his highness king George v of England with himself as the patron and the prince of wales as the Honorary President. The institute grew in importance and influence across the world. Queen Elizabeth II renamed it the chartered institute of Transport in 1971. In 2001 merging with the leading professional logistics body, it became a chartered institute of logistics and Transport international. The institute grew in importance and influence across the world and territorial organizations in eleven countries were established. It is a global membership organization integrating professionals from the transport and logistics sector who contribute to improving the art and science of logistics to Transport and influence and shape government policies. The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport is the leading professional body associated with logistics and transport. CILT is an international organization with branches in 30 countries of the world with over 30,000 members worldwide. It has 11 Territories.

CILT International Certificate

First developed in 2006, the Certificate operates at Level 3 (A level/post-18 school/college leaver standard). It was revised in 2012 to take account of the changing profile of the global transport and logistics sector. Students studying our qualifications will automatically gain access to the International Knowledge Centre – giving access to an extensive range of best practice and learning material. Four subjects are compulsory while the remaining three are selected from optional subjects. Many candidates complete the programme earlier depending on experience and exemptions.

CILT International Diploma

For entry to the International Diploma candidates are expected to have prior knowledge of logistics and transport operations and an awareness of the integrated nature of supply chain activities. Ideally this is through their own work experience and /or knowledge gained from studying the International Introductory Certificate and Certificate level courses. Successful completion of the CILT International Diploma together with a minimum of two years’ appropriate experience meets the eligibility criteria for membership upgrade from Student Member to Member (MILT) of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Candidates study a total of 4 units: 1 mandatory unit, 1 or 2 electives (from a choice of 3) and 1 or 2 optional units (from a choice of 13). Assessment is by examination. CILT International Advanced Diploma

The focus of this course is on strategic logistics and transportation management. Issues in this area will be explored in depth and at a relatively advanced level. The student is expected to fully understand concepts and ideas around strategy and demonstrate competence in actually applying strategic thinking. Due to the advanced level of the qualification, it is not possible to take units in stand-alone format. Students studying our qualifications will automatically gain access to the International Knowledge Centre – giving access to an extensive range of best practice and learning material.
